Saturday 15 October 2011

This past weekend eZee electric bicycles SA strutted their stuff at the 16th Outdoor Adventure and Travel Expo, this year held at the V&A Waterfront Lookout/Granger Bay events area. It was a busy week for your eZee importer, James Swift, and we could only join the show on Saturday morning. Our colleagues, Bike and Saddle, had arrived early on Friday already and it was a pleasure to arrive at their stunning tent with all the hard work already done.

The Bike and Saddle stand was so good that the organisers awarded them one of only 6 Gold Awards for exhibitors at the event. Well done Bike and Saddle!

Last year’s expo was held at Bien Donne farm in Franschoek, and we can only wonder if the Franschoek lawns aren’t perhaps a more alluring venue than the tarmac and gravel surface of the Lookout venue. Saturday also started out cloudy and cool so it was a fairly quiet day.

Nevertheless, the sun eventually found it’s way through the clouds and there was a quick rush of visitors just after lunch and eZee Bike enjoyed a good deal of attention. Better than expected sales over the last couple of months has left us with only one Liv and one Sprint to show off, but test rides and demonstrations of our two entry level models put a smile on the face of many an interested passer-by. We certainly drew more feet than the other exhibitors in our area!

As usual, it was great to share some eZee joy with members of the public. We remain passionate about our bikes and sharing that passion is what eZee is all about!

We are expecting our new stock to arrive later this month and will be keeping you posted. We are sure many of you will join the already big bunch of Cape Town eZee riders using an elegant eZee for your daily commute.

Watch this space!

eZee keeps on innovating. See below detail of the new Torq NuVinci. Not available in SA as standard, but can be ordered through eZee SA.

We have now available the Torq NuVinci, step variable hub gear with a range of 360 % vs the Shimano Nexus 8 or Alfine 307 %, based on transmission spheres rather than gears with a 5 year warranty. For more information please check www.NuVinci.com.

On the eZee Torq (option now for 45 kmph) and NuVinci 360 the cadence is perfect, you need only to pedal casually instead of furiously even at 45 kmph.

This is available only in Pedelec mode (only this make sense given the power and speed and the gear range) with the EAF arrangement.

Coupled with new hydraulic brakes from Tektro which has electric cut off (At this speed it is better to have electric cut off).

And of course nothing less than the Cycle Analyst would show the technical sophistication of the bike and rider.

eZee is the only ebike in the world that goes with 37V 28 Ah 888 Wh battery capacity.

The idea of building an electric bike came about over a holiday in Clarens in the Eastern Free State. I use an ezee Torq in Joburg, but it’s a touring oriented bike with large wheels and narrow tyres. Most of Clarens except the main road, is dirt and being a small village, I wanted something comfortable to potter around on. It’s also very hilly, and smaller wheels would be more suited to hill climbing.

I started with a frame that had a more upright riding position, stripped it and sprayed it black. Once reassembled, I started fitting the electric kit. First came the front wheel and the first obstacle. The kit I had was with a 28 inch front wheel, and I wanted to use the fat takkies that came with the cruiser, not only for looks, but also for comfort on the dirt roads. I started by removing the motor from the front wheel, and getting everything I needed to rebuild it into the second wheel, but after a day of fiddling and an hour on the internet, I realised that wheel building is an art better left to the experts. Off the wheel and motor went and a week later, it was back. The dropout on the fixed forks was a fraction to narrow to take the motor axle, so I filed off about the thickness of the paint in order to get a snug fit, making sure I did this on the thicker, rear section of the dropout. The inside of the left fork barrel also needed a little filing.

Next up was the pedelec sensor which had to be fitted onto the crank with the left pedal removed. Unfortunately on this bike, the BB housing was too thick to accept the ring mounted sensor, so I had to file down the underside of the frame. This was followed by more taping and re-spraying to cover the exposed metal.

The handle bars I chose for an easy riding position, and fitting the throttle and battery gauge were the easiest part. All the connections on the kit are unique, so you can’t really go wrong plugging everything together.

The controller needs to stay cool so it had to be somewhere exposed. I found just the right spot on the two parallel cross bars and used kitchen cupboard clips to attach it. The carrier I poached off an old mountain bike but it needed some adjusting and mounting brackets to get it to fit.

After the first test ride I knew I needed some changes. The front wheel under power, on bumpy dirt up-hills was skipping and scrabbling for traction all the time. The problem was that everytime it went over an undulation, it started to spin as it touched the ground, so I replaced the fixed forks for an old set with suspension that were soft, and had very short travel. This, combined with a softer tyre pressure, completely eliminated the problem, and it suddenly felt like a Range Rover on dirt.

The bike goes beautifully and is the coolest ride in town. Still on the list of things to do, are add the front mudguard (need to invent some sort of bracket for the forks), get some leather panniers (to house the battery), and put a bigger “granny gear” sprocket on the back for easier hill climbing.
